Some of Iran’s oldest infrastructure is still doing its original job. Qanats, underground tunnels first built centuries ago, continue to carry groundwater to villages in dry parts of the country using nothing more than slope and gravity.

How Qanats Move Water Without Pumps

The system is straightforward in principle and difficult in practice. A qanat taps an aquifer and channels it through a gently graded tunnel, often over long distances, until it reaches the surface where people can use it. Because the water travels underground for most of the route, the design helps limit loss in hot, arid conditions. No pumps are required.

Why Qanats Still Matter in Dry Regions

That is part of why qanats remain notable now, not just as historical works but as working systems. In places where surface water is limited, these tunnels still supply water in a way that depends on careful construction rather than mechanical power. The method is old, but the function is current.

Maintaining an Ancient Underground Water System

Keeping a qanat in service, however, is not passive. The tunnels can collect debris or suffer small collapses, and maintenance means going underground to clear and repair them. That work is narrow, manual, and necessary. A qanat that is not maintained does not simply preserve itself because it is ancient.

Iran is closely associated with the qanat, but the larger point is practical: this is a water-moving system designed for dry landscapes that, in some cases, has lasted for generations because communities kept it usable. Its significance is not only that it survives from the past. It is that in some villages, water still arrives through a tunnel system planned long before electric pumps became standard.
