Quick Summary
  • What: The Jules Rimet World Cup trophy was stolen in London in March 1966 and recovered a week later by a dog named Pickles.
  • Where: Westminster Central Hall and Upper Norwood, South London, England.
  • When: March 1966, shortly before the 1966 FIFA World Cup.

In March 1966, the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy vanished in London just months before England hosted the tournament. It was one of the most embarrassing sports thefts of its time. Days later, it turned up in an ordinary South London street, wrapped in newspaper, after a dog named Pickles sniffed it out.

Jules Rimet Trophy Theft

The trophy had been on public display at Westminster Central Hall during a stamp exhibition. On March 20, thieves took it from its display case despite security on site. The disappearance immediately became national news. This was not just any piece of silverware. The Jules Rimet Trophy was the original FIFA World Cup trophy, and England was preparing to stage the 1966 World Cup in front of the world.

Police launched a major investigation. A man using the name “Jackson” reportedly demanded a ransom, and the case quickly took on the shape of a crime story rather than a sports story. Officers arrested one man, Edward Betchley, in connection with the ransom attempt, but the actual theft itself was never fully resolved.

Pickles Finds the World Cup

The recovery came by chance. On March 27, just a week after the theft, a man named David Corbett was walking his dog, Pickles, in the Upper Norwood area of South London. Pickles became interested in a package lying near a parked car. Corbett checked it and found an object wrapped in newspaper. Inside was the missing World Cup trophy.

That is the detail that fixed the story in public memory. Not the exhibition hall, not the ransom note, not even the police hunt, but the fact that the most famous trophy in football was recovered because a household dog stopped to investigate a suspicious parcel on a neighborhood walk.

1966 World Cup Aftermath

There is a reason the story has lasted. Big sports thefts usually end with a planned recovery, an informant, or a confession. This one ended with accident and routine. In the context of the 1966 World Cup, that contrast made it memorable: a global sports symbol disappeared in a major capital city and was found by pure luck at street level.

England went on to win the 1966 World Cup, and the Jules Rimet Trophy was presented at Wembley that summer. The stolen trophy recovered by Pickles was the real one, found in South London on March 27, 1966, wrapped in newspaper and abandoned outdoors.
